Billy had spent all of saturday hiding in the Preserve. A C.I.A. agent in Fandom? One he didn't know? He wasn't taking any chances. But he'd promised himself he'd come here today.
*knock*knock*
"What?!" came an irritable voice from inside. The door cracked open with that little safety chain. "Who'sit?"
"Uh, hi, I'm Bill, is Zanya home?"
Zanya's mother gave him an appraising look. "So you're the one beat up those assholes she was hanging out with?"
"Uh, yeah that'd be me."
The door shut and he heard the chain being released before she opened it again. She looked tired, worried, but also, possibly a bit relieved.
"Zanya ain't here."
"Oh," behind her, he could see that the apartment looked just as bad as he'd last seen it. "Uh, do you know where she went? Or when she'll be back?" He doubted it.
She shrugged. "Probly never. Went looking for her dad."
Billy grimaced and fought the urge to headwall. That's what that message had been about! No wonder he'd been unable to get hold of her after that.
"Oh." he said, trying not to sound as unhappy as he was at the prospect. It wasn't like they were the loves of each other's lives right?
"Just as well." her mom continued. "Not like we were gettin' along, and if she can find that prick, hopefully she'll be better off. That is if she can convince Zartan she's really his daughter."
"...WHAT?!"
