Eckerd College, Sailing 101
Sep. 17th, 2008 04:44 pmThe syllabus proclaimed him to be Mr. J. Buffet. He had dark hair, and a perpetual smirk that seemed to say that he was holding some big secret. Or that he knew all the secrets of all his students.
"Good morning." he smiled. "I'm Mr. Buffet." He stood on the dock facing the half dozen or so freshmen. He didn't even look twice at Billy, which the boy appreciated. The others, aside from Mei Ling and Tony were a bit distracted by the one eyed boy. They were also eying his legs as if to guess which one was fake. He was wearing his usual baggy trousers.
"Welcome to Sailing 101." He handed out a handout with schematics for the boat, and a list of essential terms. "Today of course is going to be easy. Introductions. Tell us your name, where you're from, and your experience sailing. Then I'll give you a quick tour of the Catharine."
Billy decided he might as well go first. "My name's William Kessler, I'm most recently from Virginia. I've never actually sailed a boat, though I've been on them. And for everyone wondering, it's my left leg." He lifted up his pant leg to show them.
"I'm Mei Ling Zi, from Queensland Australia, yes really. And I've been out on boats before too, but I've only gotten to do a little bit of steering."
"I'm Tony Walsh, from Minnesota. I have never even been near a boat. I know, I fail. Epic like."
When class was over Billy headed for the Crossroads Cafe. "You guys hungry?" he asked Mei Ling and Tony.
"Yeah why not." Mei Ling nodded.
Tony shook his head. "Got something to do. I'll catch up with you later Cap'n."
Mai Ling raised an eyebrow. "Cap'n?"
Tony smirked. "Yeah didn't you hear? They call him Cap'n Bill."
"He's the only one who calls me that." Billy said idly.
Mei Ling giggled. "Not for long Bill."
Tony waved them off, then headed off for the room. When he was sure he was alone, he made a phone call.
"It's me." he said, his voice suddenly taking on an Irish accent. "This is the most ridiculous assignment you've given my by the way. But everything's goin' jus' fine. I need a background check done on a Mr. J. Buffet. No, not the singer."
