San Francisco, Thursday August 20th
Aug. 20th, 2009 09:46 pm"If we'd met in Crescent City we could have gone to the beach and looked for bigfoot." Billy joked.
Mei Ling smacked him on the arm. "You have his phone number." she smirked. "No challenge there and we go to the beach all the time anyway."
Grinning, he put his arm around her. "Now that would be something." he said. "Bigfoot attending Fandom High. That might actually beat out the talking frog for weirdest student."
"They'd have to know it was Bigfoot though." she mused. "They'd just think he was some kind of Alien otherwise wouldn't they?"
"Could be. But the Aliens we've got all look human. Except for bumpy ridges on their foreheads." He stopped at the little coin operated binoculars that offered views of the bay and the bridge. "This is downright insensitive." he mock grumbled. "They should have a telescope for us one eyed folk. I'm writing a letter."
His girlfriend sighed. "You people are so touchy. I think you just want attention."
"Now now, no controversy please. Your comments could be construed as offensive." Billy and Mei Ling turned to find a rather ominous looking pair facing them.
The man had to be at least as big as Roadblock, if not bigger. Billy hadn't believed that was possible. His bald scalp was tattooed from the bridge of his nose to his ears. He glared at Billy with undisguised distaste. The woman looked amused. She looked at Mei Ling. "Miss you should leave. We're just here to take your friend into custody. No need for you to get involved."
Billy was touched when she grabbed at his hand and held it tightly. "What do you mean?" she asked bravely. "What's going on?"
"I'd like to know that myself." Billy agreed. "Who are you?"
"That's as classified as you are." the woman said.
Now Mei Ling was looking at Billy with as much confusion as she'd looked at them with apprehension. "Bill?"
"There's no need for this to be unpleasant." The big guy had yet to speak. "Come quietly please." Her smiled turned unpleasant. "Or not. It's all the same to me. Now my comrade here would prefer you didn't."
"Awfully public place for this isn't it?" Billy countered. "I'm not going anywhere until you tell me what's going on." Almost as an afterthought he turned to Mei Ling. "You should go though. I'll meet you later."
"Bill, tell me what's going on?"
"Your boyfriend is a possible threat to national security, that's what's going on. Now get out of here because it looks like he's going to be difficult and I'd hate for you to mess up your very tasteful outfit with his blood. Or get hurt." Her tone clearly said that she actually wouldn't mind either.
With the air of one who was about to reveal a great secret, Billy took both of Mei Ling's hands. "Mei Ling,"
"What?"
"Run!" He spun her away, and gave her an encouraging shove before diving in the opposite direction. He felt the movement of air as the silent giant lunged for him. Jesus if that behemoth had connected...
He didn't get far. A sharp blow to the back of his neck sent him tumbling, though he recovered quickly. Spinning, he snapped a kick at the woman who'd just hit him. She was fast, at least as fast as Storm Shadow. She ducked out of the way and hit him again. The tips of her fingers striking his shoulder, sending a numbing agony through his entire arm.
He didn't stop for a second, knowing if he did, they'd have him. A blow from the tattooed man to his artificial leg strained the leather straps holding it on, but they held true. But Christ did that hurt!
He pushed past the pain and grinned. Though the grin was more like a feral grimace. He'd fought Trolls. He'd learned tricks from all over the galaxy just by watching. These two shouldn't stand a chance.
He dodged to blows at once, one from each, and struck out at both as well. Falling to his back, he braced with his hands and got the man in the knee with all the force he could muster from his prosthetic, while caught the woman at the hip joint. Without pausing, he rolled to his feet. He caught her wrist as she swung at him, and twisted it into an elbow lock.
She rolled out of it as the man bludgeoned him in the back with one massive hand. He felt himself driven to the ground, and then held there with one foot. The man looked at the woman questioningly.
"No." she said. "Vaughn wants him alive."
Vaughn. Not a name he recognized. It was tempting to hang around a bit and see what this was all about, really. But, well, no.
He swung his fake leg out like he was doing half a split, and slammed his heel into the man's hip. He'd never twisted in quite that way before. "That's gonna hurt come winter." Thank God he'd been continuing his ninja training.
It had worked though. He'd knocked his assailant off balance enough that he was able to twist free. He turned a forward roll into a handspring and that into a kick that the woman was only partially able to dodge.
Sirens. Good. While they were distracted he could, and did, do a fade.
Later he made two phone calls. One to the hotel room he was sharing with Mei Ling.
"Bill what happened? Where are you?"
"I don't think I can tell you. This line may not be secure."
"What the hell does that mean? Bill what the hell is going on?! Why are you a threat to national security? What's with this classified shit?"
Billy pinched the bridge of his nose. "I'm not. At threat I mean. But I am...classified."
"You're not a foster kid are you."
"No. I'm in witness protection."
"And those people?"
"I don't know who they were, but I'm certain they weren't from the government."
"You're not dangerous?"
"No."
"But the people looking for you are."
"Yes."
There was a long pause on the other end. "Am I in danger?"
He wished he could say no. "I don't know. You shouldn't be they shouldn't be able to-"
"You son of a bitch." she swore. Another pause. "I don't blame you for lying to me but....Bill this isn't what I signed up for. I don't...I'm not spy girl okay?"
"So...what're you saying?" he said after yet another long silence. "Is that it?" He wasn't angry with her. That was a good sign right? If he was like his father he would be right?
She sounded like she was barely hanging on. "I don't like doing this over the phone Bill. But...it's probably safer not being around you. So, yeah. At least for now."
After that uplifting conversation, Billy called Duke.
"They're the Red Shadows." Duke explained in a tired, worried voice. "They're certainly not affiliated with the government. But they are after Cobra, which I guess makes you a legit target to them. Are you okay?"
"I'll be sore in the morning, but it could be worse. Will they come after me again? What about my family?"
"I think you'll be okay, but we'll double your protection until they're dealt with, just in case. You say they let your girlfriend go?"
Ex. "Yeah. So, they're not likely to go after Mom and the rest. Duke what's going on?"
"We don't know much. But...Billy Lady Jaye is dead."
